 Building Happiness

“Set your reliance on the army of justice, put on the armour of wisdom, let your adorning be forgiveness and mercy and that which cheereth the hearts of the well-favoured of God.” (Revealed by Baha’u’llah, “Tablets of Baha’u’llah”, p. 139)

Making---the world an uplifting stage, a place where everyone grows and for better; the sky a sunnier, bluer one with shining stars; the horizon a brighter promising sight, where the heaven and earth meet with lasting sparks; and our every day of life a joyous and happier, a most positive and rewarding experience!

By and rising up to new day to live every breath in full, aiming high to do our best in valuing ourselves through developing our inner potential, and helping someone to do the same—live better and become happier—however in just a small and simple way that we can help and inspire them.   By becoming the answer to someone’s prayer for good and noble dreams, we often find the answers to our own.  Anyone with whom we associate and come in contact with, a dearly known and near or of people around and about whose path crosses ours, receive motivation, feel special and become happy and inspired,  often animate joy and smile—and it is then much easier and sweeter too for us to smile more and be happier.

Radiant acquiescence, happiness and true joy, conscious existence and understanding, confidence and trust, positive fairness and willing respect, optimism however stilled in dark and cheerfulness though crushing be everything that surrounds, signify power and unflinching will, the inner purity and spiritual radiance.  All are signs of a resplendent character and each a shining reflection of an understanding brilliant mind.  To develop these sterling traits and possess such growing spiritual capacity and wealth in one’s being is the highest perfection and ultimate fruit and meaning of the human existence.

“This is the Day whereon the Ocean of God's mercy hath been manifested unto men, the Day in which the Day Star of His loving-kindness hath shed its radiance upon them, the Day in which the clouds of His bountiful favor have overshadowed the whole of mankind.  Now is the time to cheer and refresh the down-cast through the invigorating breeze of love and fellowship, and the living waters of friendliness and charity.”  (“Gleanings from the Writings of Baha’u’llah”, p.7)

“Send, therefore, unto my loved ones, O my God, what will cheer their hearts, and illumine their faces, and delight their souls.”  (Prayer revealed by Baha’u’llah, “Prayers and Meditations”, p. 195)

The New Way of Life and Living
“Strive to be shining examples unto all mankind, and true reminders of the virtues of God amidst men.” (Revealed by Baha’u’llah, “Tablets of Baha’u’llah”, p. 138)

"How good it is if the friends be as close as sheaves of light, if they stand together side by side in a firm unbroken line. For now have the rays of reality from the Sun of the world of existence united in adoration all the worshippers of this light; and these rays have, through infinite grace, gathered all peoples together within this wide-spreading shelter; therefore must all souls become as one soul, and all hearts as one heart. Let all be set free from the multiple identities that were born of passion and desire, and in the oneness of their love for God find a new way of life.” (‘Abdu’l-Bahá, “Selections from the Writings of ‘Abdu'l-Bahá”, p.75)

By finding faults in others and busying ourselves with their doings and shortcomings, sayings and imperfections, we actually are damaging our souls, polluting our own minds, folding the wings of our spirits and hurting, really deeply, our own hearts.

Words are to unfold the potentials and powers, they are to give wings to hopes, enforce the efforts and good work of people, are to shield them of harms, defend and hold them standing up in the faces of failures and weaknesses; they are to embrace the spirits with care and caress the shaking and ailing hands, are to open and nourish the minds and to heal and rejoice the hearts. If used to do these, then through the words, we can only hope to re-orient the minds, the hearts, and their lives, helping to uplift and educate our own race, the humankind, worthy of its noble title, step by step carrying on our precious call in serving the ever-advancing civilization!

We, people, most of all of us at least, learn by love, by true compassion, by simple courtesy and thoughtful small acts, by sincere caring and sharing of what we have to offer, selflessly and absolutely free without any expectations in return—by setting day to day lofty and silent examples—and not by centering our all on ourselves, not by walking over others to reach our own ends, not by unkindly attitudes, critical minds and words, nor by quiet indifferences or visible disregards.

“A kindly tongue is the lodestone of the hearts of men.   It is the bread of the spirit, it clotheth the words with meaning, it is the fountain of the light of wisdom and understanding.” (Revealed by Baha’u’llah, “Gleanings”, p. 289)

“The first sign of faith is love. The message of the holy, divine Manifestations is love; the phenomena of creation are based upon love; the radiance of the world is due to love; the well-being and happiness of the world depend upon it. Therefore, I admonish you that you must strive throughout the human world to diffuse the light of love.”  (Revealed by `Abdu’l-Baha, “Promulgation of Universal Peace”, p. 337)

“Lift the hem of your garment to receive”
God’s abounding gifts and favors with
“joyous gratitude and radiance”

To count our blessings is to understand the true meaning of wealth, infinity and life!

To be grateful for the blessings of God in time of want and trouble is necessary. In the abundance of blessings everyone can be grateful. It is said that Sultan Mahmud cut a melon and gave a portion of it to Ayaz who ate it cheerfully and expressed gratitude. When the Sultan ate a little of the same melon, he found it bitter. He asked, ‘How did you eat such a bitter melon and show no sign of disliking it?’ Ayaz answered, ‘I had eaten many sweet and palatable things from the hands of the Sultan and I thought it very unworthy of me to express dislike on eating a slightly bitter thing today.’ Thus man, who is immersed in the blessings of God, should not be grieved if he experiences a little trouble. He should not forget the manifold divine bounties.” (Words by `Abdu’l-Baha, 2 September 1912, in Montreal, “Mahmud’s Diary”)

Gratitude and conscious appreciation begins when we empower our attitudes and visions with positive energies, sunny thoughts and enjoyment of however little joys which come our way.  When we pause and care to recognize and count our blessings—which naturally calls for a degree of active vigilance and personal discipline combined with an eager sense of fairness and humility—not taking for granted anyone, or anything, not a bit, not a moment of our lives, we surprisingly realize how much happier we become and how truly lucky each one of us is!

“God’s care and loving-kindness surge even as the eternal billows of the sea and His blessings are continually showered from His eternal Kingdom. Ours should be the prayer that His blessings may be vouchsafed in still greater abundance and ours to hold fast to such means as shall ensure a fuller outpouring of His grace and a greater measure of His divine assistance.  One of the greatest of these means is the spirit of true fellowship and loving communion amongst the friends.  (“Selections From The Writings Of `Abdu’l-Baha”, p. 92)

However blissfully and happily it may be invested with myriad of long years, compared to the spiritual realms of God and eternally infinite worlds following this limited mortal one,  “The life of man in this world is short… one must appreciate every breath of his life and endeavor in that which is conducive to eternal glory.”  (“Tablets of `Abdu’l-Baha”, v.1, p. 206)

“Associate with all in perfect love and kindness; hold all dear and count all friends and familiar ones; know no enemies; imagine no strangers.  Thus mayest thou be a mercy to the people of the world and a source of bounty to the world of humanity.  (“Tablets of `Abdu’l-Baha”, v.1, p. 667)

With such a noble spirit and willingly drawing a conscious outlook, gazing on such a worthy horizon and celebrating life so nobly at its every beat, is the secret and the reward of happiness, successful longevity and real youth.  After all everything that relates to the time and the place, the matters and balancing figures, deductions and sums, are all only relative, passing conditions and mortal.  The age units, for example, and the counts of birth years and adding months and days are merely physical contracts—which are there for certain purposes and needed order in life of course, but are not more really, are less.  Stepping up a pace or two above the worldly grounds and its bumps and pompous rocks, we can and we should change how they operate and influence us and our attitudes and moods.  Doing thus, we sit in command and take charge of our lives at every turn and twist, altering the rules of upsets and obstacles by raising the horizon of our thoughts and actions.  High in spirit and broadened in visions, we then with dilated hearts spread our wings, soar and seek to consort with stars—and living in the joy of becoming a shining one, we haste in chasing and faithfully following “The Moon”!

“The earth is in the motion and growth; the mountains, hills and prairies are green and pleasant; the bounty is overflowing; the mercy universal; the rain is descending from the cloud of mercy; the brilliant Sun is shining; the full moon is ornamenting the horizon of ether; the great ocean-tide is flooding every little stream; the gifts are successive; the favors consecutive; and the refreshing breeze is blowing, wafting the fragrant perfume of the blossoms. Boundless treasure is in the hand of the King of Kings! Lift the hem of thy garment in order to receive it.” (`Abdu’l-Baha; “Baha’i World Faith”, p. 351)
